Dr. Donald William Sherrick, 92, of Springfield, died on Monday, June 26, 2023, at his home.He was born on October 16, 1930, in Carthage, IL, the son of Otho Carl and Helen Rebecca (Downing) Sherrick. Bill married Jean Karol Loudon on June 18, 1955, at First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, NE. She preceded him in death, on September 15, 2020.
Bill earned his B.S. from Knox College where he was a scholar athlete. He went on to Yale University to receive his M.D. with honors. After medical school, Bill proudly served as a Captain in the Unites States Medical Corps. Following his military service, he completed his radiology residency at Mayo Clinic. In 1963 the Sherrick family moved to Springfield, IL where Bill was one of the founding members of Clinical Radiologists SC. During his 31 years of practice, Dr. Sherrick served as the first chairman of the Department of Radiology for SIU School of Medicine. He was also a member of the executive committee of the medical staff at Memorial and served as President from 1981–1982. Other offices he held included President of the Central Illinois Radiological Society, President of the Illinois Radiological Society, and Counselor of the American College of Radiology. He authored several articles published in medical journals and served as President of Clinical Radiologists SC for 11 years.
Bill was a proud 57-year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and served as an ordained elder. His hobbies included tennis, golf, walleye fishing, reading, and woodworking. He was an avid bridge player, a long-suffering Cubs fan, and enjoyed traveling with family and friends, particularly the annual Sherrick fishing trip to Northern Minnesota. His greatest joys were his family, church, and supporting his grandchildren in their endeavors and education.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and brother; daughter, Karol Scanlan; and daughter-in-law, Ellen Moss.
Bill is survived by his children, Dan Sherrick (Mary Beijan), Laura Sherrick, and Andy Sherrick (Karen); son-in-law, Ron Scanlan; and eleven beloved grandchildren: Sarah, Ben, Nicky, and Ruby Sherrick, Ali and Ethan Reichel, Jack and Annie Sherrick, Kassidy Apodaca, and Sean and Jack Scanlan; two nieces, Becky and Susie Sherrick; and one nephew, John Sherrick.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. A memorial Ceremony will follow at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Blythe Denham Kieffer officiating.
