Capt. Patrick A. Noonan (USNR Retired), 91, of Springfield, died December 11, 2020 at Memorial Hospital after complications from the COVID-19 virus.

Born Patrick Arthur Noonan on August 19, 1929, he was the second and last child of the late Paul R. "Punch" and Ann Lloyd "Nan" Noonan. He attended Butler Grade School and graduated from Springfield High School in 1947. He was selected by the Navy for an NROTC scholarship to Yale University, where he earned his BA in Economics with honors in 1951.

During his college years, Mr. Noonan spent his summers at sea, advancing his training aboard various US Navy vessels. During term time, he stayed on the water as the coxswain of Yale's crew, whose competitions included an appearance at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. Immediately upon receiving his Yale diploma, he boarded a train to Norfolk to join the crew of the U.S.S. Wisconsin. The battleship was stationed off the coast of Korea during the war, and Mr. Noonan long recalled and recounted many stories about his service, both at sea and, occasionally, on land missions to direct the ship's guns.

After the Korean War, Mr. Noonan returned to Springfield to wed Julia Ann Sutton. He joined his father at Dixon Bretscher Noonan, Inc., starting a career in financial services that lasted until his retirement from Merrill Lynch in 2017. Over the years, his acumen was called upon in additional roles as Chairman of the Board of Illini Bank, and as financial consultant to the City of Springfield, the Park District, City Water Light & Power, the Airport Authority, School District 186, and others.

In addition to a lifetime of dedication to his clients, Mr. Noonan demonstrated a life of public service. His list of community involvement, accomplishments and recognitions is lengthy and includes board roles for American Red Cross, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Girl Scouts, St. Paul's Church, Memorial Hospital, Kings Daughters Home, United Community Services, and the American Business Club. Mr. Noonan also served on the Central Illinois screening board for the US Naval Academy, and as alumni interviewer for area applicants to Yale University.

Mr. Noonan also held elected office for many years, first chosen by the citizens to represent Woodside Township as Auditor in 1967. He continued Tax Collector and then as a member of the Sangamon County Board. Mr. Noonan was the elected Chairman from 1988 to 1996, during which time he led the conception and development of the current County Building.

In addition to being widely respected in the community, "Noonie" is remembered fondly by his family and friends as an avid golfer; fan of the Cardinals and the PGA; devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather; and a lover of animals and good scotch. He savored hearing the accomplishments of his sons and their own families, and he was always their patient counselor, dedicated supporter and proud, loving fan.

Mr. Noonan was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his sister Nancy N. Patton. He is survived by his sons Patrick Sutton Noonan (Parlee) of Atlanta, GA, Christopher Hay Noonan (Michelle) of Springfield, Peter Todd Noonan of St. Louis, and Thomas Andrew Noonan (Teri) of Springfield, as well as 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom deeply mourn his loss.

Private services will be held in Springfield, with a celebration of life expected to take place in August 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Simmons Cancer Institute. c/o SIU Foundation, P.O. Box 19666, Springfield, IL 62794-9666 or the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62701.

The family is being served by Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL.
