SPRINGFIELD, IL - John P. "Jack" Fixmer, III, 79, of Springfield, died at 6:13 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Memorial Medical Center.

Jack was born Sept. 16, 1936, in Springfield, the son of John P. and Mary Louise (Condit) Fixmer. He attended Springfield schools, graduating from Springfield High School in 1954. He graduated with a B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1958. He married his high school sweetheart, Gale Jones, on June 22, 1958, at Douglas Avenue Methodist Church in Springfield.

Jack served for two years in the Army Ordnance Corps at the Joliet Arsenal. After working for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company for two years, he moved to Libertyville in 1962 to take an actuarial position at Hewitt Associates, a consulting firm. He worked for Hewitt for 30 years, becoming a partner in the firm. He was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, serving on its pension committee.

During his years in Libertyville, he served as President of the Libertyville-Mundelein YMCA Board and as a ruling elder at First Presbyterian Church.

After his retirement, the Fixmers moved back to their home town where Jack was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and a member of the Kiwanis Golden K, serving as Secretary and President. He was a member of the Sangamo Club and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Jack enjoyed classical music, movies, the Chicago Bears, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved to tell a good joke and was a master of puns.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gale; his children: Susan (husband, Jim) Dyer of Carmel, Ind., John P. Fixmer IV of Delray Beach, Fla., and David (wife, Beth) Fixmer of DeKalb, Ill.; six grandchildren; and his sister, Janet (husband, Tim) Murtaugh of Chicago.

The family would like to thank the staff of Auburn Rehabilitation & Health Care Center for their wonderful care during the final years of Jack's life and the staff of Memorial Medical Center for their loving attention during his last days.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield, IL 62704.
