SPRINGFIELD, IL - Joseph C. Dawkins, 93, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Heritage Health Care.
He was born April 29, 1920, in Rosedale, Miss., to Joseph Yancy and Emma Slay Dawkins. He married Betty Jean Graves in 1960 in Memphis, Tenn.
He had been a resident of Springfield since 1961.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Elizabeth Rimmer, Jean Gaia and Bea McDougal.
Mr. Dawkins graduated from Western Kentucky University with a B.S. in Accounting. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Illinois Society of CPA's. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving principally in North Africa in WWII. He retired from Ernst and Young in 1985. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and a former board member of the Illinois Presbyterian Home.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Joseph C. Dawkins, Jr. of Springfield; daughter, Susan Slay (husband, Grant) Russel of Findlay, Ohio; and two grandsons, Peter and Franklin Russel.
Friends may call Saturday April 19, 2014 at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 1 p.m. until the time of memorial services there at 2 p.m., the Rev. Julie Wells-Blythe officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Memorial Garden Columbarium.
