OBITUARY
SPRINGFIELD - Dr. Robert "Coach," "Carp," "Doc" Dean Carpenter of Springfield passed
away at St. John's Hospice on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010.
Bob was born in Dugger, IN on June 14, 1925, the son of Lowell and Blanche (Duke) Carpenter. His parents; Alice Carpenter, mother of his sons; and an infant daughter preceded him in death.
Bob graduated from Wiley High School, Terre Haute, IN. He received his undergraduate and master's degrees from Indiana State University and received his doctorate degree in special education from Southern Illinois University in 1976. Bob was an English teacher, coach and assistant principal of Feithans High School from 1948 to 1966, assistant state director for special education, Office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and worked for Department of Children and Family Services and Department of
Economic Opportunity, formerly DCCA. Bob served in World War II in the Navy, in the invasions of Normandy and Southern France
serving on a troop transport ship. He also served on a troop transport ship in the Pacific Ocean. While in the Navy, he was the Fleet boxing champion. He was active in coaching his sons in youth baseball and basketball. He loved hunting and raised
bird dogs for many years. He enjoyed golf, bowling, shuffleboard, pool, loved people, singing, dancing, and playing the ukulele.
He was a member and past deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church, lifetime member of Springfield Elks Lodge 158, a fifty-year member of St. Paul's Masonic Lodge 500, Ansar Shrine, Legion of Honor, and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 755.
Bob is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Nikki; sons, Rance Dean (wife, Ellen) of Springfield and Ron Duke (wife, Julia) of Indianapolis, IN; sister, JoAnn Hundley of Indianapolis, IN; Nikki's daughters, Kim Holloway (husband, Jeff) of Greenbrier, AR and Shelly Bott (husband, Dan) of Bartlett, IL; two nieces and one nephew; 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; and Nikki's twin sister, Lee Hadley of Chinook, WA. A memorial and celebration of life will be held June 12, 2010, at the Springfield Motor Boat
Club, Lake Springfield. Announcement of time at a later date. Bob's remains will be cremated.
Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
At this time the family requests no flowers be sent, but asks that memorial contributions be sent to St. John's Hospice or the Disabled American Veterans.
