James A. Singleton, a long-time Springfield physician, died December 19, in Asheville, North Carolina, after a brief illness. He was 94 years old. He is survived by sons James (Marcela), John (Kathy), and Pat (Dossie); grandchildren, Jessie, Phil, May, Gloria, and Roo; and two great-grandchildren, Hank and Walter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne (Evans) Singleton.
If you know people born in Springfield between 1961 and 1994, you probably know someone whose birth he attended. Jim practiced as an obstetrician-gynecologist for more than 30 years, attending the births of over 10,000 babies, and providing care to thousands of patients. He was an enthusiastic advocate for improvement in medical practice in technology, training, and access. He introduced prenatal fetal ultrasound and electronic fetal monitoring in Springfield. He was on the clinical faculty of the SIU School of Medicine for 25 years. He trained in microsurgical technique in the last decade of his career, continuing to grow as a practitioner until his retirement. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Association, the Sangamon County Medical Association, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Jim was born in Mannington, West Virginia in 1930. He attended Mannington schools, played football, rode ponies, hunted, learned woodworking from his grandfather, and became the head lifeguard at the municipal swimming pool. He was a Boy Scout, achieving Eagle Scout with Order of the Arrow. He studied at West Virginia University where he consistently made the Dean’s List, and won a varsity letter on the university’s riflery team. He earned his MD degree at Thomas Jefferson Medical College (now Thomas Jefferson University) in Philadelphia. He interned at The Delaware Hospital. He served in the military as a Captain, US Army Reserve at the US Army hospitals at Fort Meade in Maryland and the US Military Academy at West Point. He completed his residency in Ob/Gyn at the Research and Educational hospitals of the University of Illinois-Chicago. In 1961, he joined a practice that became Springfield Obstetric and Gynecologic Associates (SOGA).
Jim bragged about only one thing: he was fulsome about having convinced Mary Anne Evans to marry him. They met while Jim was in medical school and Mary Anne was in graduate school for music education. The two married on August 8, 1953, creating a union that was the center of their lives for 69 years, until Mary Anne’s death in 2022. Jim and Mary Anne loved the arts, the outdoors, travel, skiing, sailing, and a wide circle of friends. They were a truly joyful dance couple, often clearing the floor. On occasion, bands applauded them. Jim was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, sharing his love of sailing and skiing across the generations. He was an advocate, a mentor, and a fan of his sons, and later his grandchildren.
Jim served on the boards of the Sangamon County United Fund, the Sangamon County Cancer Society, Sangamon County Child and Family Service, and Springfield Planned Parenthood. He was an Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation prior at 1:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield.- jalt
