Phyllis J. Lowrey, 83, of Springfield, passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, Saturday Nov. 30, 2024 at 10:26 pm.
She was born in Chicago, IL, June 18, 1941 the daughter of Harold and Lillian (Martin) Norman. She married Haldor C. Lowrey in 1965 and he preceded her in death in 1996. Her parents and a sister also preceded her in death.
Phyllis was a graduate of Iowa State University earning her Master’s degree. She was an educator at heart and she would focus her career on teaching for many years. She taught as various schools and community colleges in Illinois, and would retire from Lincoln Land Community College in 1996.
Phyllis was a faithful and dedicated member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon and was a member of the Lydia Circle. She was a volunteer and offered transportation to many through the Caregivers. Phyllis was also a member of PEO. She loved to travel with her husband, with memorable trips to London, Scotland and Ireland. After Haldor passed away, she continued to travel with family and friends. The Bahamas, Alaska, Panama Canal became additional favorite destinations.
Surviving are her three children: Pamela M. Lowrey of Springfield, Robert E. (Sherrill Kent) Lowrey of Plantation, FL and Norman A. Lowrey of Chatham, IL. She has a grandson, Samuel (Danielle) Kent of Coral Springs, FL and three great grandchildren; Amelia, Olivia and Aria. There are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Lowrey family will greet family and friends on Friday Dec. 6, 2024 at the Bisch Funeral Home 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield, IL from 4:00-7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024 at 10:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church 533 S. Walnut Springfield, IL. Rev. Dr. Blythe Denham Kieffer will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
