Presents: Race and Religion in America: The 1960's and Today
In his high school years, Rogers Smith attended an Illinois Synod summer institute in Decatur where black and white church leaders and members from around the state had important discussions of civil rights issues. The following summer Rogers participated in the Westminster Youth Mission Trip o Mt. Morris Presbyterian Church on 125th Street in Harlem where they slept on the church floor. The boys did repairs and the girls helped with the Head Start program. In preparation for the mission, the youth read and discussed African-American history and literature, including the Autobiography of Malcolm X, The Fire Next Time, and Manchild in the Promised Land. During the mission week, the youth saw the Temptations who were playing at the fabled Apollo Theater. These two experiences set Rogers on the road to becoming a political scientist who has studied struggles over equal citizenship in America for over 45 years. Dr. Smith will share thoughts on the significance of race and religion in American life, then and now.
